Reflecting on a Year of TTRPG Resolutions: Successes, Challenges, and New Goals
At The Wizard’s Respite Sanctorum, we take our TTRPG passion seriously—so much so that last year, we made a set of ambitious resolutions to improve our experiences as players, GMs, and content creators. As we begin another year, it’s time to look back at what we accomplished, what fell by the wayside, and how our goals have evolved.
Looking Back on a Year of TTRPG Growth
Last year, our resolutions were a bit chaotic. Due to a miscommunication, we each made nine resolutions—three in separate categories for playing, GMing, and exploring new games. While admirable in scope, tracking progress proved difficult. This time around, we’re refining the process: one resolution per category, making it more focused and achievable.
Player Resolutions: Deepening Roleplay and Exploring New Character Arcs
One of our primary goals as players this year is to focus more on character development rather than optimizing stats or mechanics. For instance, Alfred Whitecastle Alastair Crowley, a space vampire in Astral Drive, is evolving from a cold, calculating predator into a character experiencing camaraderie for the first time. Navigating this shift is a major roleplaying challenge, blending elements of his noble upbringing with the need to survive in a universe that fears and hunts his kind.
GM Resolutions: Running Meaningful Games and Managing Time
As Game Masters, our goals remain ambitious yet refined. Ash aims to run a Dungeons & Dragons 5E one-shot for Zach, fulfilling a resolution from last year that never came to fruition. This will serve as both an introduction to the system for Zach and an opportunity to craft a compelling short-form adventure.
Games We Want to Play in 2024
We both have long lists of games we’d love to play, but two stand out above the rest. Ash’s top choice is finally experiencing Ordo Scriptorium as a player. Having been deeply involved in its creation and having run it for others, the opportunity to step into the role of an author-hunter in 1950s supernatural noir is too enticing to pass up.
Moving Forward: A Year of TTRPG Growth
This year, we’re taking a more structured approach to our resolutions—focusing on what’s achievable while still challenging ourselves. Whether through refining roleplay, running new games, or finally getting the chance to play long-anticipated systems, 2024 is shaping up to be a year of meaningful TTRPG experiences.
